Doris McCarthy-Lora Carney collection

Collection consists of the research files kept by Doris McCarthy and Lora Carney, including exhibition notices, press releases and invitations, photocopied articles, hand-written sheets containing references and notes, a few slides and photographs, some personal correspondence, 2 theses, and a binder of copied material relating to Ann Davis’ book on Christiane Pflug. The Rae Simone file contains 12 black & white photographs, the Carolyne Dukes file contains 10 slides, and the Marian Scott file contains a signed letter and transcript of an interview with Doris McCarthy. The files were kept for the purpose of publishing a book on Canadian women artists and cover artists from across the country from the 19th century to the early 21st century. There are files on a few male artists integrated into the sequence, added by Prof. Carney. Exhibition catalogues have been removed and integrated into the library collection. A list of these catalogues is available. A list of the original file names is also available. The collection is arranged in a single series by artists’ last names, preceded by a few geographical files, arranged by province. Files containing only one or two records have been combined by the archivist in a ‘miscellaneous’ file for each letter of the alphabet.

Collection consists of audio recordings of interviews with individuals who were active in the Toronto visual art community during Robert Markle’s lifetime, art historians, and friends and family of Robert Markle. Collection also includes two notebooks containing transcriptions and notes. Interviews were created and used in the process of researching Blazing Figures: A Life of Robert Markle. Collection consists of posters designed by Will Munro for events organized by him at various venues in downtown Toronto. Posters employ a variety of media and processes, including silkscreen and photocopies. Some of these posters were featured in Will Munro: Total Eclipse, July 31-September 26, 2010, part of the Toronto Now series of exhibitions at the AGO. Silk-screening of many of the posters was carried out by Michael Comeau.

Collection consists of letters solicited by Donald Buchanan for his study James Wilson Morrice: a biography (Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1936). Correspondents include Léa Cadoret, W. Somerset Maugham, Gerald Faustus Kelly, Charles Prendergast, Elizabeth R. Pennell, Clive Bell, Walter Pach, David Morrice, Pavel Ettinger and Henri Matisse. Also included are a photograph of Morrice, a postcard from him to William Brymner, and photographs of three of his works.

Fonds consists of drawings, watercolours and designs of A. H. Howard produced in Toronto between 1880 and 1914, especially in the sketchbooks in which Howard drew Ontario landscapes and towns, flowers, trees, human figures, factory interiors and other subjects. Also included are examples of his decorative and calligraphic work from illuminated presentation addresses, certificates, bookplates and other materials.

Ann Davis-Christiane Pflug collection

Collection consists of a series of recorded interviews gathered or commissioned by Ann Davis in the course of her research for her biographical work Somewhere Waiting: The Life and Art of Christiane Pflug. Several interviews were conducted by Ann Davis’ assistant, Elizabeth Schwaiger, who is a professional translator. The subjects of the interviews are people with whom Christiane had contact with throughout her life. For the most part, the interviews focus on the interviewees’ relationship to Christiane and/or her family. The collection also contains older recordings with the voice of Christiane herself.
