Frederick S. Challener collection

The collection consists of newspaper articles, reproductions, illustrations, exhibition notices and invitations, death notices, photographs and biographical notes on 112 Canadian artists (birthdates 1803 to 1915) and four arts organizations: Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, Ontario Society of Artists, Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and Toronto Art Students’ League.

Canadian bookplate collection

Collection consists of ornamented and illustrated bookplates accumulated by the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) Library and Archives beginning in 1969. In that year, AGO librarian Sybille Pantazzi acquired the first group of items now included in the collection, and added to it in 1975 and 1978. The Library and Archives continues to augment the collection.
The bookplates in the collection were chiefly designed for Canadian book collectors, libraries and associations by Canadian, American and other artists from the 19th century to the present day. The collection includes armorial, presentation and other bookplates and 1 leaflet, and comprises various forms of prints such as engravings, etchings and woodcuts. Most of the bookplates have not been used.

Avis Lang - Jack Chambers collection

Collection consists of correspondence between Avis Lang Rosenberg and Jack Chambers over a three-year period, slides created for the proposed book, transcriptions of taped interviews, contents of a notebook, poetry and prose written by Chambers, research notes, Lang’s writings on Chambers, exhibition catalogues and a private press publication containing illustrations by Chambers. Much of the material is present in photocopied form. File titles were assigned by Avis Lang, except where square brackets are used. The collection is arranged in a single series.

L.A.C. Panton fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, lecture notes, newsletters, cards and party invitations, exhibition catalogues, reproductions of art works, passport, certificates, and photographs relating to L.A.C. Panton’s personal and professional life. The photographs range from portraits of his family in England to scenes that provided the basis of paintings, particularly the Nova Scotia coastline. Correspondence relates to his involvement in art societies and his community in North Toronto but does not include his family life. Letters were received from several members of the Group of Seven, Florence Wyle, Arthur Heming, Fred Brigden, G.A. Reid and many others. Clipping files relate both to his professional life and his interest in economics and current events. The fonds arrived at the archives in no discernible order; order has been imposed by the archivist to correspond as much as possible to a file listing found in the fonds. Fonds consists of records relating to the life and work of the artist and author Charles William Jefferys. It includes the artist’s correspondence, notebooks, research materials and manuscripts of his written work. Also included in this fonds are the research materials compiled by Robert Stacey, the artist’s grandson, about all aspects of the life and work of Jefferys, including information on all Jefferys’ writings and art, articles and reviews published by and about Jefferys, as well as information about the artist’s personal life, professional activities and travels. Stacey also conducted research on the Jefferys family history. Fonds includes an album (disbound) containing 45 photographs of paintings and prints restored by Rawbon, with a typed description of the "Rawbon Process" signed and dated, 1921. Collectors and collections mentioned include: Elliott W. Atkins, Toronto; Hôtel Dieu, Kingston; Major Kenneth C. Macpherson, Ottawa; Col. W. O’Brien, Shanty Bay; D.A. Story, Halifax; R.E. Cooper, Victoria; A.J. Gough, Toronto; C.S. Gzowski, Toronto; Mrs. John Small, Toronto; Henry O’Brien, K.C., Toronto; Walker House, Toronto. Fonds also includes a notebook containing a list of “Canadian Artists: Members of the Royal Canadian Academy and The Ontario Society of Artists”, September 1922. The back pages of the notebook contain records of sales of “Oxford” and “Lusterize” polish formulas, and of free sample canvas stretchers sent out to clients. Fonds also includes 14 prizes and diplomas won in art and photography competitions at fairs in southern Ontario (1874-1887); 2 photographs of J. Loxton Rawbon; notes on art restoration methods; correspondence and testimonials; and press clippings related to Rawbon’s career.

Tovell Family fonds

Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence received by Harold Murchison Tovell, Ruth Massey Tovell and Vincent Tovell, most notably from their friends the French artist Jacques Villon and his wife Gaby from 1928 to 1962. Other correspondence concerns the lending and donation of family artworks. Also included are catalogues for exhibitions of the works of Jacques Villon and his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon as well as inventories and photographs of Tovell family artworks and furnishings. Collection consists of illustrations clipped from fashion magazines, general-interest periodicals, children’s
picture books and other illustrated books, bringing together the work of over 275 illustrators published
between the 1860s and the 1920s, chiefly in the United States, Britain and Canada.
Fashion magazine covers in series 1 featuring imaginative and extravagant costumes are full colour
lithographs, as are most of the sheets in series 4 (Illustrations from publications for children). Illustrations
in series 2 (Book and magazine illustrations) are largely achromatic images depicting events in fictional
and poetic works, and include printed black-and-white wood engravings. Many folders contain a single
sheet of illustration by one artist, while series 3 (Gustave Doré illustrations) consists of more than two
hundred published wood engravings by prolific French artist Gustave Doré. The collection of over 3000
items offers a perspective on the era of illustration by graphic artists before it was largely superseded
(except in children’s literature) by photography.
