Item contains handwritten instructions on how to restore paintings, with recipes for cleaning compounds and canvas preparations, along with brief records of work done by Gertrude Spurr Cutts, perhaps in Port Perry, Ont. in the 1920s and 1930s for several named clients. Records in the notebook include the titles and dimensions of the paintings restored, with amounts charged. The 1845 edition of Henry Mogford’s Hand-book for the preservation of pictures (London: Winsor and Newton) is cited as a source of guidance on paintings restoration.

Sam and Ayala Zacks fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence with art dealers, artists and public art institutions, invoices, shipping and customs forms and other documents relating to their involvement in the international art market in the mid-20th century. Carbon copies of letters written by the Zacks and letters written to them are included. The fonds also contains the administrative files kept by the Zacks: insurance lists, index cards for art and books, photographs and catalogues. The fonds includes the records of the Zacks’ involvement as board members in a variety of organizations relating to the arts, including agendas, memos, minutes of meetings, and travel arrangements. Correspondence files document the Zacks’ involvement in the State of Israel, through its cultural institutions, and communication with prominent citizens. Mrs. Zacks’ papers created after her husband’s death relate to her honourary degree, the Order of Canada, board activities and social involvement. Collection consists of letters solicited by Donald Buchanan for his study James Wilson Morrice: a biography (Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1936). Correspondents include Léa Cadoret, W. Somerset Maugham, Gerald Faustus Kelly, Charles Prendergast, Elizabeth R. Pennell, Clive Bell, Walter Pach, David Morrice, Pavel Ettinger and Henri Matisse. Also included are a photograph of Morrice, a postcard from him to William Brymner, and photographs of three of his works.

Textual materials include the artist’s correspondence (including translations from German to English provided by Michael Pflug), records of exhibitions, and a manuscript relating to her childhood. Visual materials include extensive photographic documentation of the artist and her family and a postcard collection used for inspirational purposes. Also included are items depicted in her paintings. The fonds also contains records documenting Michael Pflug’s activities and his life and relationship with Christiane Pflug. It includes his correspondence, manuscripts of an unpublished autobiography, and records related to the management of Christiane Pflug’s art.
