Sample B+W Heat Transfer on Metal […]

File consists of an image transfer print from "Scenes from a movie for one," on a metal plate coated in encaustic wax that Astman used in teaching. The plate was originally wrapped in a sheet of paper with handwritten notes.

Glass - Handmade Nagative - Using High Contrast Film[…]

File consists of an experimental collage made of pieces of negative transparencies that have been cut into various shapes and pressed between two pieces of glass, used as a sample in Astman's teaching. Astman sourced the materials for this sample by taking discarded pieces of large-format negatives from students' work, shaping them and placing them together between glass to create a collage. This piece was shown to students as an example of a work that can be created using materials that might otherwise have been discarded.

Top Etched Glass Samples Plus Etched Glass Of An Image Of My Sister Carol

File consists of two samples of sandblasting etchings on glass, featuring an image of a spiral with "S O" on the back in pen and an image of Astman's sister, sourced from Xerox material. Also includes a sticker sheet of the letters of the alphabet and a note describing the process creating the etching. The glass etching that is partically covered in tape shows a middle step in the process Astman sometimes used to create sand-blasting etchings, which used tape as one of the materials to create resistance to the sandblasting, preventing the glass underneath from becoming frosted. The etching featuring an image of Astman's sister was created used "liquid etch" or "etch in a bottle," which can be used to create detailed etchings.
