Archival history
The earliest exhibitions put on by the Women’s Committee were art sales, which were intended to raise money to start a purchase fund supporting the expansion of the AGO’s permanent collection. The first exhibition was held at the home of Lady Kemp, selling works by Canadian artists with the gallery collecting a small commission on sales. These annual art sales continued until 1962. The Women’s Committee also put on exhibitions focused on specific media or themes, including jewellery, drawings, plastics, and garden sculpture.
