Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence to Douglas Duncan as director of the Picture Loan Society in Toronto between 1936 and 1966, and his personal correspondence with Norman Endicott and their friends in common during the 1920s. Also included are records of Canadian artist David Milne from the 1950s and British painter Robert ‘Scottie’ Wilson from about 1945 to 1970; both were clients of Douglas Duncan and friends of Norman Endicott. Duncan, DouglasCollection consists of the research files kept by Doris McCarthy and Lora Carney, including exhibition notices, press releases and invitations, photocopied articles, hand-written sheets containing references and notes, a few slides and photographs, some personal correspondence, 2 theses, and a binder of copied material relating to Ann Davis’ book on Christiane Pflug. The Rae Simone file contains 12 black & white photographs, the Carolyne Dukes file contains 10 slides, and the Marian Scott file contains a signed letter and transcript of an interview with Doris McCarthy. The files were kept for the purpose of publishing a book on Canadian women artists and cover artists from across the country from the 19th century to the early 21st century. There are files on a few male artists integrated into the sequence, added by Prof. Carney. Exhibition catalogues have been removed and integrated into the library collection. A list of these catalogues is available. A list of the original file names is also available. The collection is arranged in a single series by artists’ last names, preceded by a few geographical files, arranged by province. Files containing only one or two records have been combined by the archivist in a ‘miscellaneous’ file for each letter of the alphabet.
McCarthy, DorisFonds consists primarily of a series of notebooks created by Dennis Burton, containing writing, sketches, photographs, correspondence and ephemera, and recording the artist’s daily activity and thoughts on a wide range of subjects and issues. Notebooks have been arranged in approximate chronological order. Fonds also includes photographs by Burton of various subjects, and a small amount of additional documentation including a file of letters from Avrom Isaacs to Dennis Burton. Fonds consists of documentation of David Blackwood’s career as a visual artist in Canada. Accumulated content includes exhibition catalogues and related documents, biographical information on David Blackwood, publicity materials, photographs and slides, preparatory drawings and sketchbooks, certificates and other awards on paper, video recordings of special events, ephemera, written correspondence with artists and art galleries, and Blackwood’s research materials from various projects.
Blackwood, DavidFonds consists of records relating to the life and work of the artist and author Charles William Jefferys. It includes the artist’s correspondence, notebooks, research materials and manuscripts of his written work. Also included in this fonds are the research materials compiled by Robert Stacey, the artist’s grandson, about all aspects of the life and work of Jefferys, including information on all Jefferys’ writings and art, articles and reviews published by and about Jefferys, as well as information about the artist’s personal life, professional activities and travels. Stacey also conducted research on the Jefferys family history. Textual materials include the artist’s correspondence (including translations from German to English provided by Michael Pflug), records of exhibitions, and a manuscript relating to her childhood. Visual materials include extensive photographic documentation of the artist and her family and a postcard collection used for inspirational purposes. Also included are items depicted in her paintings. The fonds also contains records documenting Michael Pflug’s activities and his life and relationship with Christiane Pflug. It includes his correspondence, manuscripts of an unpublished autobiography, and records related to the management of Christiane Pflug’s art.
Pflug, ChristianeFonds consists of the records of the Canadian Art Club, including minutes of the organization’s meetings, constitution and by-laws, membership lists, photographs of artworks, documents of incorporation (1909) and ultimate dissolution (1930s) and club financial records in the form of ledgers and a collection of bills and receipts. Materials related to club exhibitions and dinners are supplemented by an extensive collection of clippings from reviews in newspapers of the day. Correspondence forms a significant portion of the papers, especially that to and from Edmund Morris, secretary of the club for several years.
