Curatorial files

Series consists of the documentation created for curatorial meetings. Files typically contain a list of submissions, the letters and proposals from artists that form the background to these lists, and standard rejection letters grouped by type. The submissions in these files are all unsuccessful applications; the submissions of successful artists were transferred to the artist files (Series 1). The slides that would have accompanied these proposals were returned. Arrangement follows the original order.

Programming binders

Series consists of the contents of binders maintained by the Programming Committee, transferred to file folders and boxes. Material includes photographs, printed pamphlets, announcements, press releases and posters published by Mercer Union, and reviews, both photocopied and original. Arrangement is by year, with two large exhibits occupying their own binders: “The New City of Sculpture” exhibit of 1984, a major collaborative effort involving five other Toronto art galleries, and the outdoor installation by Tadashi Kawamata in 1989. Also included are spiral-bound books used 1987 to 1990, compiled from photocopied material, and an early arrangement of 2 files with programming notes and lists (1979 to 1984), including an index. Arrangement follows the original order.

Artist/exhibit files

Series consists of the following elements: correspondence with artists, CVs and artist statements, exhibition checklists, exhibition catalogues or pamphlets (published by Mercer Union), published material about the artist from other sources, press releases, contracts, reviews of the exhibit and documentation regarding shipping and installation instructions. Individual files contain some or all of these; the presence of photographs or other material not on the above list is noted. The Eli Langer file is followed by several files of legal materials relating to anti-pornography legislation. Arrangement is roughly alphabetical by artist or exhibit name

Exhibitions

Exhibition files document the work of organizing exhibitions, arranging loans, installing art, communicating with artists, publishing catalogues, and related activities.

Exhibition files may include exhibition proposals, correspondence, agreements and arrangements with lenders, catalogue material, sponsorship records, lists of works, panel text, photographs of works, exhibition layouts, visitor feedback, invitations, exhibition flyers, and other printed material. Files may also include research done by curators and research staff including photocopied articles, notes, and correspondence with art museums and collectors.

Rejected exhibitions

Series consists of records relating to exhibitions that were proposed or considered, but not shown at the AGO. Rejected exhibition files may include exhibition proposals, correspondence, research files, lists of works, and correspondence with curators, artists, and potential lenders.

Note that “Rejected Exhibitions” is a general internal label used for exhibitions that did not happen at the AGO for a variety of reasons. Exhibitions in this series were not necessarily rejected by AGO staff. For example, this series includes records related to planned exhibitions that were cancelled due to logistical difficulties.

General administration

Series consists of administrative records from the Curatorial department of the AGO. Contents include records related to the department’s operations and planning such as program evaluations, publicity, external relations, and general administration.
Also includes records relating to the department’s joining with Extension Services, which was a separate division before it was amalgamated with Curatorial in 1981.
