Biographical questionnaires

Series consists of files containing forms published by the Art Gallery of Ontario and filled in by artists. The early forms (1912-1930) contain the following fields: Name (in full), Born (Date), Studied, Have received awards as follows, Am represented in the following collections,
Member of, Refer to published articles, books, etc., as follows, Date, Post Office Address, Signature. Many of the forms have been pasted onto larger sheets and in some cases letters, clippings and death dates have been added. In a few cases there are two forms of different dates for one artist. Forms from the 1970’s additionally ask for art dealer, technique, works in private collections, works in public collections and positions held. The forms are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.

Toronto Painting '84 questionnaires

Series contains files compiled in preparation for a show of Toronto painters by the Adult Programs Department at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Letters from Peter Dale with questions attached were sent in May 1984 to the 24 artists involved in the show. There were three slightly different questionnaires, each with 7-8 questions. The letter and lists of questions can be found in the administrative files. The responses are arranged alphabetically.

Correspondence files

Series consists of Robert Markle’s “Letters” files of correspondence received, which were filed chronologically by Markle. Series also includes some correspondence files assembled by the archivist. File titles have been taken from Markle’s file labels, except for those in square brackets, which have been supplied by the archivist.

Arts’ Sake files

Series consists of records relating to Robert Markle’s participation in the creation of and teaching at the independent visual arts school “Arts’ Sake” in Toronto. Records include notes on curriculum and on the concept of the school, and promotional material. Series also includes Markle’s notes on the New School of Art, ca. 1977.

Published writings and illustrations

Series consists of copies of publications featuring writing or illustrations by Robert Markle, including magazines, literary journals, poetry collections and novels. Frequently-appearing periodical titles are Toronto Life, Macleans, Canadian Magazine, and Imperial Oil Review. Some press clippings of newspaper articles by Markle are also included, as is an exhibition notice designed by Markle for The Isaacs Gallery.

Series includes exhibition catalogues for Richard Gorman and John Meredith, books on beer and brewing, a booklet on education in Creemore (Ontario), Gordon Lightfoot’s autobiography, and a number of exhibition invitations for artists other than Robert Markle.
