Biographical materials

Series comprises of a set of five binders containing various textual records and graphic material compiled by Michael Bidner. Materials consist of black and white photocopies, collage prints, correspondence, photographs, slides, negatives and transparencies. Bidner organized and structured the binder contents using divider pages with brief paragraphs of text documenting each section. Sections are arranged chronologically and a date is given on the descriptive text. The fifth binder contains only slides and lacks any descriptive notations. Materials relate to high school plays, Bidner’s art catalogues, sales of his work, exhibition invitations, reviews and publicity, awards and grants, studio spaces, and art pieces. Subjects of photographs and slides include the artist, studio space, art pieces, and scenes of art-making or in-progress works.

Biographical questionnaires

Series consists of files containing forms published by the Art Gallery of Ontario and filled in by artists. The early forms (1912-1930) contain the following fields: Name (in full), Born (Date), Studied, Have received awards as follows, Am represented in the following collections,
Member of, Refer to published articles, books, etc., as follows, Date, Post Office Address, Signature. Many of the forms have been pasted onto larger sheets and in some cases letters, clippings and death dates have been added. In a few cases there are two forms of different dates for one artist. Forms from the 1970’s additionally ask for art dealer, technique, works in private collections, works in public collections and positions held. The forms are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.

Boards and committees files

Series consists of printed material and correspondence relating to the Zacks’ membership on various boards. Included are agendas, minutes of meetings, reports and other enclosures sent to members, documents received from architects, accountants and other professionals, newsletters and annual reports. The series has been grouped by institution and is arranged chronologically within each group.

Book and magazine illustrations

United States from the mid-19th century to around 1915. These include the work of 132 artists, for which predominant sources were monthly and weekly periodicals featuring fiction with captioned narrative illustrations, including The Century magazine, Collier’s, Cosmopolitan, Cornhill magazine, The delineator, Everybody’s magazine, Good words, Harper’s monthly magazine, Harper’s weekly, The leisure hour, London society, McClure’s magazine, Scribner’s magazine and Scribner’s monthly.
Several illustrations come from mid-19th-century books such as those created by Myles Birket Foster for his Beauties of English landscape (London : George Routledge and Sons, 1874), by Thomas Creswick for Poems by Alfred Tennyson (London : E. Moxon & Co., 1866) and by John Dawson Watson for The pilgrim’s progress by John Bunyan (London : Routledge, Warne and Routledge, 1861).
Other sources were general-interest magazines and fashion magazines, including The bookman, Harper’s bazar, The illustrated London news, Life and Vanity fair, that contained sections featuring the artwork of illustrators. A small number of magazine covers in colour and some pages from U.S. newspapers are included The folder of illustrations by John Tenniel includes an issue of The art journal ([April], 1901, designated “The art annual”) consisting of “The life and works of Sir John Tenniel” by Cosmo Monkhouse.

Series consists of bookworks by Greg Curnoe, most printed with the rubber stamping technique. Two (“The Coke Book” and “Walks”) are handwritten.

Business Files

Series is comprised of the business and professional files of Robert Fones. It includes grant applications, awards, income tax returns, and documents relating to the sales and exhibition of his work as well as the publication of his writing. Of note is 21 years of correspondence with Carmen Lamanna, Robert Fones’ first Toronto art dealer from 1970 to 1990, and with S.L Simpson Gallery, which subsequently represented Robert Fones. It also includes correspondence and agreements with regard to his art related teaching career.

Series is comprised of various ephemera, including Can-D-Man postcards, invitations to book launches and other events, samples of letterhead and logos, newsletter, one audio cassette of talking books sampler, a partial publication by David Rosenberg, Excellent Articles in Japan. It also includes invitations to Fones’ book launch for Anthropomorphiks.
