Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence to Douglas Duncan as director of the Picture Loan Society in Toronto between 1936 and 1966, and his personal correspondence with Norman Endicott and their friends in common during the 1920s. Also included are records of Canadian artist David Milne from the 1950s and British painter Robert ‘Scottie’ Wilson from about 1945 to 1970; both were clients of Douglas Duncan and friends of Norman Endicott. Fonds consists of correspondence with art galleries, artists and others regarding the acquisition and lending of artworks, as well as general correspondence with members of the Canadian arts community. Correspondents include André Bieler, B.C. Binning, E.J. Hughes, Jean-Paul Lemieux, Arthur Lismer, J.W.G. MacDonald and Frederick Varley (including a 1951 filmscript on Varley by Allan Wargon). The fonds also comprises two pen or pencil sketches by Arthur Lismer of C.S. Band, photographs of him and his friends, photographs of his collection, and installation shots of his artworks in exhibitions along with several exhibition catalogues. The fonds includes correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, drawings, poems, notes and memorabilia relating to Helen Sanderson’s student days at the Ontario College of Art and subsequent teaching career. Many of these were pasted into a scrapbook, entitled ‘Art School Days’, forming a distinctive memoir of student life in the 1920’s and 1930’s. The fonds is arranged in a single series.

Fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Art Club, including minutes of the organization’s meetings, constitution and by-laws, membership lists, photographs of artworks, documents of incorporation (1909) and ultimate dissolution (1930s) and club financial records in the form of ledgers and a collection of bills and receipts. Materials related to club exhibitions and dinners are supplemented by an extensive collection of clippings from reviews in newspapers of the day. Correspondence forms a significant portion of the papers, especially that to and from Edmund Morris, secretary of the club for several years. Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence received by Harold Murchison Tovell, Ruth Massey Tovell and Vincent Tovell, most notably from their friends the French artist Jacques Villon and his wife Gaby from 1928 to 1962. Other correspondence concerns the lending and donation of family artworks. Also included are catalogues for exhibitions of the works of Jacques Villon and his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon as well as inventories and photographs of Tovell family artworks and furnishings.
