Tovell Family fonds

Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence received by Harold Murchison Tovell, Ruth Massey Tovell and Vincent Tovell, most notably from their friends the French artist Jacques Villon and his wife Gaby from 1928 to 1962. Other correspondence concerns the lending and donation of family artworks. Also included are catalogues for exhibitions of the works of Jacques Villon and his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon as well as inventories and photographs of Tovell family artworks and furnishings. Fonds consists of corporate records of Gallery Moos, including files on artists and associated dealers and galleries, art fair participation and travel, business correspondence, publishing and administrative records and the records of David Moos and gallery director Gerard Jennings. Fonds also contains the gallery’s published material, including exhibition invitations and catalogues, posters, and limited edition publications. Two films on gallery artist Gershon Iskowitz are also included.
The accrual of 2004 consists of Series 8 and Series 9, listed below. In 2012 the accrual of material from Gallery Moos augmented Series 1–6, 8 and 9, and added Series 10–14.

Fonds consists of personal and professional records created by Gilbert and Stewart Bagnani and their families, chiefly in Europe, North Africa, and Canada, for the most part between ca. 1910 and 1955, comprising photographs of Gilbert Bagnani's travels and archaeological work in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Libya and Egypt in the 1920s and 1930s; a motion picture of his activities in and around Tebtunis in Egypt in 1934; correspondence between the Bagnanis themselves, Gilbert Bagnani's mother Florence Bagnani and other family members; photos of the families of Gilbert and Stewart Bagnani, including 19th-century photo portraits of their Dewar, Houston, and Robinson relatives; a collection of copy prints and glass slides of art and antiquities used by Dr. Bagnani in his university teaching; audio recordings of Dr. Bagnani lecturing; albums of clippings and memorabilia of family and social events; miscellaneous printed, typescript and manuscript items; photos of the Bagnanis at Trent University in the 1980s; an album of postage stamps; and other material.

The fonds consists of correspondence with art dealers, artists and public art institutions, invoices, shipping and customs forms and other documents relating to their involvement in the international art market in the mid-20th century. Carbon copies of letters written by the Zacks and letters written to them are included. The fonds also contains the administrative files kept by the Zacks: insurance lists, index cards for art and books, photographs and catalogues. The fonds includes the records of the Zacks’ involvement as board members in a variety of organizations relating to the arts, including agendas, memos, minutes of meetings, and travel arrangements. Correspondence files document the Zacks’ involvement in the State of Israel, through its cultural institutions, and communication with prominent citizens. Mrs. Zacks’ papers created after her husband’s death relate to her honourary degree, the Order of Canada, board activities and social involvement. Henry Sandham collection

Collection consists of a four-volume set of proof engravings by Henry Sandham for his illustrations in Century Magazine and other publications. The engravings were assembled by the artist, who inscribed in ink on the title page of volume 1: “The only complete set of proofs of the engravings from Hy Sandham’s drawings for Century Magazine from 1881 to 1886. These proofs were printed from the blocks before they were electro-typed and cannot now be reproduced except by being engraved again. The cost of each print in this book was fifty cents. Hy. S.”

Edmund Morris fonds

Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence to Edmund Morris as an artist and as secretary of the Canadian Art Club, Toronto (extant 1907-1915). Materials relating to the art club were received predominantly between 1906 and 1913 and deal with the membership of the club, with artworks and with art publications. Correspondents include artists Peleg Franklin Brownell, Edmond Dyonnet, Clarence Gagnon, James Kerr-Lawson, Ernest Lawson, James Wilson Morrice, Alexander Phimister Proctor, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Côté, Horatio Walker, Homer Ransford Watson and poet Duncan Campbell Scott. Also included are letters written by Edmund Morris himself and a few received by other members of the art club. The approximately 800 items were originally in two letter-binders. Although most of the items are letters, the fonds also comprises exhibition notices, invitations, newspaper and journal articles, lists of artists and artworks, price lists, illustrations, prospectuses, lists of subscribers for memorials (etc.), invoices, as well as miscellaneous items such as visiting cards, envelopes, an abstract of land title, a telegram and a cancelled cheque.
