Photographs of Canadian artists collection

Collection comprises photographic prints submitted with replies to biographical questionnaires sent by the AGO to Canadian artists between 1912 and 1984. The collection was augmented with 239 photographs purchased from Toronto photographer M.O. Hammond (1876–1934) between 1927 and 1934. Collection also includes photos and copy prints obtained in connection with Gallery exhibitions and photos acquired by other Gallery departments, with news photographs and reproductions of photos from agencies and other institutions. Photos were added to the collection up to the end of the 1990s.
The photographic prints in the collection are chiefly gelatin silver prints but also include chromogenic colour prints, diffusion transfer prints and photos produced by other processes. The collection includes images of 598 artists in studio portraits and snapshots, at exhibition openings and in their studios, and in group photos. Some photographs are annotated with biographical details on verso or in accompanying textual records.

Fonds consists of the archival contents of Betty Goodwin’s studio, including sketchbooks and notebooks in which she drew and recorded inspiration and ideas; loose sketches and notes; found and manufactured objects retained for their aesthetic or inspirational qualities; printing plates; folders containing inspirational found images and the artist’s re-workings of same; photographs of the artist and her work spaces; folders and a maquette relating to proposals for public commissions; a small amount of personal correspondence and publicity material; photographic documentation of her artwork; her numerous awards and honourary degrees; and video documentation of Goodwin’s dance collaborations.

Fonds consists of records relating to the life and work of Christiane Pflug. Textual materials include the artist’s correspondence (including translations from German to English provided by Michael Pflug), records of exhibitions, and a manuscript relating to her childhood. Visual materials include extensive photographic documentation of the artist and her family and a postcard collection used for inspirational purposes. Also included are items depicted in her paintings. The fonds also contains records documenting Michael Pflug’s activities and his life and relationship with Christiane Pflug. It includes his correspondence, manuscripts of an unpublished autobiography, and records related to the management of Christiane Pflug’s art.
