Exhibition catalogues

Series consists of exhibition catalogues from private and public art galleries, art periodicals, clippings from magazines and newspapers, and assorted printed material generated by art galleries, including posters and invitations. Arrangement is alphabetical by artist, beginning with a file of group show catalogues. An unknown number of catalogues was donated to the Fine Art Department, University of Toronto, in 1974 (see correspondence in Box 17.1).||

The fonds consists of correspondence with art dealers, artists and public art institutions, invoices, shipping and customs forms and other documents relating to their involvement in the international art market in the mid-20th century. Carbon copies of letters written by the Zacks and letters written to them are included. The fonds also contains the administrative files kept by the Zacks: insurance lists, index cards for art and books, photographs and catalogues. The fonds includes the records of the Zacks’ involvement as board members in a variety of organizations relating to the arts, including agendas, memos, minutes of meetings, and travel arrangements. Correspondence files document the Zacks’ involvement in the State of Israel, through its cultural institutions, and communication with prominent citizens. Mrs. Zacks’ papers created after her husband’s death relate to her honourary degree, the Order of Canada, board activities and social involvement. Artist files

Series contains correspondence with artists, art dealers and institutions, invoices, shipping and customs documents, loan and reproduction forms. The arrangement is alphabetical by artist name.||

Photographs

Series consists of photographs including slides and negatives, of past, present and potential works of art in the Zacks’ collection. They were stored in labeled envelopes containing numbers that corresponded to insurance lists. Archival envelopes have replaced the originals, with photocopies of the original inserted. The original numbering systems have been maintained and the files kept in the arrangement as they were found.

Personal records

Series consists of correspondence, drafts of speeches, press clippings, CVs, contents of a binder containing records of Mrs. Zacks’ personal art collection, membership certificates and material relating to her honourary doctorate and Order of Canada. Most files were specifically labeled as the property of Mrs. Zacks; the series also contains some files that fall outside the boundaries of the other series. These include a file of miscellaneous donations made by the Zacks Foundation, a file relating to the material in the Samuel J. Zacks fonds at the National Library and Archives of Canada and magazine articles about Mrs. Zacks. The files have been grouped together by subject, with one oversize box at the end

General correspondence

Series contains letters, invoices, shipping and customs forms, relating to the purchase of works of art, and social and personal correspondence. Four distinct sets of correspondence files have been grouped in this sub-series, following the original file labels: chronological art correspondence (Box 1), alphabetical art correspondence (Box 2), chronological [general] correspondence (Box 3), and alphabetical “Misc.”correspondence (Box 4).
