The fonds consists of exhibition lists; manuscripts of articles, lectures, radio broadcasts, and a book; correspondence; art education pamphlets; materials related to a National Film Board production about the artist; papers about other artists; memorabilia from the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto; photographs and papers relating to Tom Thomson; and a source book on Arthur Lismer prepared by Marjorie Lismer Bridges.

Angela Grigor-Arthur Lismer collection

The collection consists of research files created by Angela Grigor in preparation for her book Arthur Lismer: visionary art educator (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2002). Materials in Series 1,2 and 3 are primarily photocopies from original periodicals, pamphlets and exhibition catalogues found in institutions in Canada, the United States and England. The collection contains Angela Grigor’s correspondence with these institutions and with Arthur Lismer’s daughter, Marjorie Lismer Bridges, and her daughter, Janet Cauffiel. A number of interviews are documented, including recordings of two interviews with Arthur Lismer for the CBC, and the many interviews Angela Grigor conducted with former students, fellow teachers and other associates of the artist. Series comprises some of Arthur Lismer’s collection of materials on teaching art to children; memorabilia from his membership in the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto including some pen sketches; offprints of articles by his friend Marius Barbeau; a published book in which Lismer drew sketches; and a commonplace book once apparently belonging to Canadian artist Charles MacDonald Manly.

Series comprises lists of Arthur Lismer’s paintings exhibited in commercial galleries in Canada in the 1930s to 1950s, and the Art Gallery of Toronto Lismer retrospective of 1950; with correspondence regarding a planned exhibition of the work of British art students in 1922, a show of Lismer’s paintings in the Eaton’s department store in Toronto in 1946, and the 1950 Lismer retrospective.

Series comprises Arthur Lismer’s correspondence, chiefly between the 1920s to 1950s, with officials at the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); the Children’s Art Centre at the Art Gallery of Toronto; Charles S. Band, president of the Art Gallery of Toronto; with miscellaneous active (unsent) and passive correspondence; and typed transcripts of some handwritten letters.
