Biographical history

(Marie) Illy Gepe (1903-) was a ceramic artist born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the area that later became Czechoslovakia. She and her husband, Herbert Gepe, immigrated to Canada in 1935. Illy Gepe was an honourary member of the Women’s Art Association of Canada in Toronto, offering pottery classes there in 1952, and a friend of Florence Wyle and Frances Loring’s.

Collection consists of an album of photographs of Florence Wyle’s sculptures; photos of Wyle, Illy Gepe, Frances Loring, and others; unattached photos and postcards of sculptures; a sketchbook; newspaper articles about Loring & Wyle; and other material.

Associated material: In 2017 an autographed copy of Florence Wyle’s Poems (Toronto : Ryerson Press, 1959) was withdrawn from the fonds and transferred to the AGO Library collection, as was a copy of Frances Loring, Florence Wyle [1969?] produced by Pollock Gallery, Toronto.
