Scope and content
Series consists of research and correspondence related to the inhabitants of Grange House – the Boulton Family, Harriet Boulton-Dixon-Smith, and Goldwin Smith. At the time of the restoration of the Grange, there was scant published material about the Boulton family, and Margaret Machell and other Grange and AGO staff undertook original research to support accurate restoration and interpretation of the house.
Series includes copies of documents and news clippings, research correspondence, research, and correspondence with descendants of the families. Series also includes John Lownsbrough’s research and drafts for his book The Privileged Few: The Grange & Its People in Nineteenth Century Toronto, which was written in the course of his work as Historic Researcher at the Grange and published by AGO in 1980.

System of arrangement
Much of this series was originally maintained with see series 14 and 15. in a collection called “Archives of the Grange.” Although there is a finding aid for “Archives of the Grange,” (which can be found in box 71), over time these records have been mixed up, and interfiled with other Boulton and Grange documents that seem to have been added at another time.
The archivist has re-arranged the collection to distinguish between secondary research materials (series 13), primary materials originating from the Smith and Boulton families (series 14), and materials relating to the Art Museum of Toronto (series 15), noting the original box numbers for records that were part of “Archives of the Grange,” where possible.
