Subseries consists of records related to adult art classes at the Gallery School, including correspondence, proposals for projects and classes, invoices, news releases, and application forms from students.

Series consists of records related to programs and lectures offered to adult audiences of the Gallery. Some programs and lectures were related to specific exhibitions at the Gallery. Files typically consist of flyers, course programmes, correspondence, attendance statistics, press releases, lecture transcripts, and proposals from guest lecturers.

In 2011, the AGO inaugurated its Artist-in-Residence program, which provides institutional support, access to facilities and a stipend covering materials and living costs for artists who create and develop new works that are presented at the Gallery. Artists respond to an annual theme, and work towards outcomes including (but not limited to) community partnerships, exhibitions, classes, workshops, family and children’s activities, online projects, interventions, publications and products. In 2021, the projects were presented exclusively on digital platforms for the first time.

Series includes administrative documents and files on each Artist-in-Residence who has worked at the AGO, including agreements, correspondence, planning documents, promotional materials for events, press releases, ephemera, events schedules, and research and reference materials.

In 1933, the AGT received a grant from the Carnegie Foundation for ten thousand dollars for educational work. This allowed for the foundation of the “Children’s Art Centre” at No. 4 Grange Rd., which lasted from 1933 to 1947. In 1947, programs were discontinued, except for those for members’ children. In 1963, classes for gifted adolescents were organized, and in 1967, classes for children and adolescents were held at the OCA (now known as OCAD). In 1977, a grant from the Outreach Ontario program from the Ministry of Culture and Recreation also led to the establishment of a summer scholarship course for teenagers.

Subseries contains materials related to children’s art classes held at the Gallery School and related programming, such as visits to other art-related galleries and institutions for Gallery School students and exhibitions of children’s artwork. Typical files include correspondence (often from educators, parents and guardians, as well as carbon-copies of correspondence from Arthur Lismer (Educational Supervisor), lists of students, attendance sheets, and course descriptions and programmes.

Record group consists of the records generated as a result of programs organized by various Education& Programming departments since educational programming first began in 1926. This includes records related to the Gallery School, adult programming (lectures, film & video programming, concert series, performances, adult art education courses, Artist-in-Residence program, First Thursdays), youth council, schools programs, access programs, family programs (March Break, All Hours). Records related to the Extension Services program are listed in the Extension Services records group.

Series contains records related to film screening programs at the Gallery, some of which were standalone programs and others for specific exhibitions. Typical files include promotional materials, press releases, schedules, budgets, proposals, and correspondence.

The Gallery School originated in the Saturday morning classes for children begun by Arthur Lismer in February 1930 and continued with the development of the Children’s Art Centre, which lasted from 1933 to 1947. The title “Gallery School” was first used around 1967. Between 1947 and the early 1950s, art classes were only offered for members’ children, for which the membership secretary was responsible. By the late 1950s, children’s art classes were well-established at the Gallery. Adult painting classes began in 1949, and teenage classes began in 1952. In 1974, the Gallery School moved to a new location in the basement of the Stage I building, which was referred to as the “activity space.” The specially designed Activity Centre was completed as part of Stage II, and the Gallery School officially moved into it in 1977. In 1989-1990, the school was renamed the Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School.

Series consists of records related to the functions, operations, and activities of the Gallery School, including publications, brochures, pamphlets, reports, correspondence, manuscripts written for operational purposes, teaching staff applications, and application forms for courses. Series also contains 2 banker’s boxes of index cards listing students enrolled in children, adult, and senior classes from approximately 1931 to 1968.

Series contains records related to the general administrative operations of the AGO’s Education and Programming department. Files typically include departmental project proposals, policies, briefs, monthly and annual reports, bulletins and programmes, research materials related to art education, correspondence with the public regarding general inquiries, interdepartmental and internal correspondence, and staffing-related materials.

Series consists of two scrapbooks assembled and maintained by the Education Department, the contents of which reflect the early years of the Department at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Focus is primarily given to Arthur Lismer’s work at the Gallery as the Supervisor of Educational Work, the establishment of the Children’s Art Centre, and children’s classes and activities at the Gallery. Materials included in the scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, correspondence, reports, proposals, bulletins, programmes, course application forms, and invitations to exhibitions of children’s artwork.

Series contains records related to partnerships, associations, and affiliations and relationships between the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Education Department and external individuals and organizations. Records in series relate to the use of Gallery spaces by external organizations for various reasons (e.g. annual general meetings), Gallery tours offered to external groups, and the Gallery’s participation in externally organized events and programs, including the development of art education/museum programs by other institutions. Typical files include applications for use of Gallery spaces, correspondence, internal work orders, invitations, news releases, and meeting minutes.
