Exhibitions

Exhibition files document the work of organizing exhibitions, arranging loans, installing art, communicating with artists, publishing catalogues, and related activities.

Exhibition files may include exhibition proposals, correspondence, agreements and arrangements with lenders, catalogue material, sponsorship records, lists of works, panel text, photographs of works, exhibition layouts, visitor feedback, invitations, exhibition flyers, and other printed material. Files may also include research done by curators and research staff including photocopied articles, notes, and correspondence with art museums and collectors.

Rejected exhibitions

Series consists of records relating to exhibitions that were proposed or considered, but not shown at the AGO. Rejected exhibition files may include exhibition proposals, correspondence, research files, lists of works, and correspondence with curators, artists, and potential lenders.

Note that “Rejected Exhibitions” is a general internal label used for exhibitions that did not happen at the AGO for a variety of reasons. Exhibitions in this series were not necessarily rejected by AGO staff. For example, this series includes records related to planned exhibitions that were cancelled due to logistical difficulties.

General administration

Series consists of administrative records from the Curatorial department of the AGO. Contents include records related to the department’s operations and planning such as program evaluations, publicity, external relations, and general administration.
Also includes records relating to the department’s joining with Extension Services, which was a separate division before it was amalgamated with Curatorial in 1981.

Contemporary artist files

Series consists of files compiled and kept by curators and research staff on contemporary artists, primarily documenting correspondence and biographical information. Files may also include press clippings, artist CVs, questionnaires, notes and other research material. Also includes some photographic prints of art works and installations.

Curators' papers

Series consists of the working files of individual curators at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Contents include records related to AGO exhibitions and acquisitions and may include records related to non-AGO activities of curators.

Permanent collection

Series consists of records related to the acquisition of artworks including information and data sheets about works in the permanent collection, research into potential donations, condition reports and conservation documentation, and correspondence with institutions and collectors.

Extension Services

Series contains photographs of exhibitions, workshops, and programs run throughout the province of Ontario by the gallery’s Extension Services department.

Events

Series contains photographs of events at the Art Gallery of Ontario including concerts, performances, fundraising events, parties, and press conferences.

The Grange

Series contains photographs related to the Grange House including photographs of the restoration in the 1970s, exhibitions and programs held in the Grange, staff and volunteers, and events. Series also includes originals and reproductions of historical photographs and documents related to the Grange and its inhabitants Harriet Boulton Smith and Goldwin Smith.

Building

Series contains photographs of the Art Gallery of Ontario building including photographs taken before, during, and after major renovations and expansions and photographs of architectural records.
