[Photocopy Lift Transfers]

File consists of an instructional document relating to photocopy lifts, a type of image transfer created using a matte or gloss liquid medium. Also includes colour and b&w prints on vellum and one emulsion transfer on a canvas panel that Astman used in teaching. Two of the vellum prints are taped to a poster board for display in the classroom.

Freezer Paper for Digital Printing

File consists of instructional teaching documents regarding transferring images onto fabric using freezer paper, four prints of image on fabric pieces, and samples of freezer paper. Also includes one colour print on tissue paper.

Rockland Colloid

File consists of a black and white image transfer print of an image of a backyard or garden, made using Liquid Light from the Rockland Colloid brand, a b&w photographic emulsion.

Photo Decals

File consists of "The Deadline" (1996), a comic created by Helene Astrom (Contemporary Photography Department at OCAD), a production still from Blackmail (1929), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, two emulsion transfers and instructional documents regarding image transfers.

Sample B+W Heat Transfer on Metal […]

File consists of an image transfer print from "Scenes from a movie for one," on a metal plate coated in encaustic wax that Astman used in teaching. The plate was originally wrapped in a sheet of paper with handwritten notes.

Fonds consists of records of the artistic and academic career of Barbara Astman, chiefly in Toronto from the 1960s to the second decade of the 21st century, including photographs of her projects and exhibitions, correspondence and textual documentation of projects, personal and other photos and journals, and some audiovisual materials.

Polaroid Collage - Peeling Apart Polaroids

File consists of collages, Polaroid photographs and transparencies, newspaper and magazine clippings, and other paper ephemera and graphic material used by Astman as collage elements, such as printouts and photocopies. Some graphic material has been taped together and cut into various shapes, or scraped and scratched to form collage and overlay components. Also includes an instructional printout from Polaroid's website regarding tips and techniques for using Polaroid P/N films.

[Teaching Samples]

File consists of teaching notes and image transfer visual aids that show the results of a variety of transfer processes, such as solvent or heat transfers, used by Astman in teaching. The visual aids contain multiple image transfers alongside the transparencies used to create the transfer and notes describing the steps taken or techniques used.

Heat Transfers

File consists of teaching notes, materials and supplies relating to image transfer works, especially by heat transfer. Includes paper ephemera such as magazine clippings, wallpaper samples, fabric pieces, vellum prints, printouts, and other graphic material used by Astman in teaching. Also includes visual aids regarding heat transfers, which contain multiple small examples of image transfers alongside the transparencies used to create the transfer and notes describing the steps taken. Some materials, including vellum prints, have been folded, cut or torn into various shapes for use in creating image transfers or other processes.

Acetone

File consists of image transfer prints on a variety of materials including paper, a copper plate, acrylic sheets, and a piece of fabric. Also includes a visual aid showing multiple examples of acetone image transfers, alongside the graphic material used to create the transfer and Astman's notes. The prints in this file exemplify the results of a variety of image transfer processes, including acetone transfers.
