This records group consists of records generated by the Gallery’s Design department and its various iterations since it was first formally established in the early 1970s. The majority of records are textual and graphic, and include final design products as well as associated drafts, mockups, and textual documents, such as memos, notes and project descriptions. Common design projects include the creation of promotional material (such as brochures, flyers and posters), paper ephemera (such as tickets, stationary and invitations), administrative documents (such as forms, receipts, and ID Cards), and Gallery signage. Additionally, the records group includes records related to publications projects from the period of time that Publications was amalgamated with the Design department, between the 1970s and early 2000s. This includes records relating to the production of catalogues, newsletters, and various Gallery publications, including Annual Reports, The Gallery, and AGO News.

Also included are some records from design and publications projects prior to the 1970s, which were completed without the assistance of a formal department. These include a competition to design a seal for the Art Museum of Toronto in 1918, publications from the Women’s Committee, and other general design projects to support exhibitions, events, and other Gallery activities.

Annual Meetings and Reports

Series consists of records relating to the design and publication of the Gallery’s Annual Reports and Bulletins, as well as invitations, ballots, and related material for the Gallery’s Annual Meetings and Board of Trustees elections. Includes project schedules, budget documents, memos and correspondence, and related textual records.

Design: Annual Report 1975-76

Files consists of records concerning the design and contents of the 1975-76 Annual Report. Included is information about the projected schedule for the design and printing of the report, budget details, and a draft of the departmental report to be included for the Design Unit in the Annual Report.

Notice of Annual Meeting

File consists of records relating to the design and publication of the 1973 Notice of Annual Meeting. Includes memos regarding costs and specifications for the notice, printing quotations, a summary of proposed changes and amendments to AGO By-Law 102, and a copy of By-Law 102.

Annual Meeting 1973-1974

File consists of records from the Publication Department relating to the Annual Meeting for 1973-1974 and the election of ten people to the Board Trustees. Includes quotes for printing, memos, a proposed timeline for the months leading up to the meeting, and a list of the nominees up for election to the Board of Trustees.

Annual Report 1973-1974

File consists of records from the Publication Department relating to the design and publication of the 1973-1974 Annual Report. Includes quotations for design and printing, a copy of the AGO's Statement of Revenue and Expenditures for 1973-74, cost estimates, memos and correspondence regarding the design and contents of the report, and a schedule for the months leading up to the delivery of the report.

Annual Meeting 1974-75

File consists of records relating to the notice for the Annual Meeting for 1974-75. Includes memos and correspondence regarding printing details for a Proxy announcement, Notice, and Information Supplement. Also includes printed drafts and proof copies.

Annual Report 1974-75

File consists of records from the Publication Department relating to the design and publication of the Annual Report for 1974-75. Includes memos and correspondence, a schedule for the report, a time table for the Annual Meeting, a list of exhibitions for the 1974-1975 fiscal year, and a list of guidelines for the Annual Report.

Annual Report, 1976-1977

File consists of records from the Design Department relating to the typesetting and printing of the 1976-77 Annual Report. Includes correspondence, quotations and price estimates, and specifications.
